This 2-day workshop is an intensive introduction to Motivational Interviewing (MI). It will provide participants with an overview of the theory, principles, and skills of MI. Participants will be guided through a sequence of experiential exercises to explore and shape communication practices, and begin the process of increasing proficiency in MI. Learning activities will include: demonstrations, video examples, role plays, case studies, small group exercises, and significant participant practice with feedback.

Target Audience: 

This workshop is appropriate for professionals or volunteers who are in a role of helping clients/patients/students, or educating individuals/groups, with a goal of making and sustaining healthy behavior change. This includes, but is not limited to: counselors, probation officers, health educators, psychologists, physicians, nurses, care managers, dieticians, social workers, occupational therapists, teachers, academic advisors, life coaches, clergy, physical therapists, personal trainers, etc.

Learning Objectives:

  • List the key ingredients of the guiding philosophy of Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Identify the foundational communication skills of MI from demonstrations and video examples
  • Identify core MI strategies for eliciting and exploring a person’s own reasons for change in practice exercises
  • Describe the 4 processes of MI for navigating conversations in the direction of change goals
  • Identify ways to incorporate the primary skills and strategies of MI into helping practice
