Trainer Statement

When I was first trained in Motivational Interviewing fifteen years ago, I was transformed by it. At the time, I was an outreach worker, going under bridges, down by the river, into shady motels—connecting with individuals and families experiencing homelessness. I had an intuitive sense of how to connect with people, but I lacked the framework and the skills to do it well. MI gave me that framework and those skills…it changed every conversation, every interaction. MI has since remained my overarching way of being with people throughout my work in homelessness, HIV, mental health, housing, and international development. As I’ve moved away from direct service and into training, teaching, speaking, and writing, I have become passionate about equipping others to use MI in their work with poor and vulnerable people.
