About Me

Dr. Sylvie Naar is a Professor and Director of the Division of Behavioral Sciences in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences at Wayne State University.  She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, and has provided trainings locally, nationally, and internationally for over 15 years.  She is also a licensed pediatric psychologist.  Dr. Naar has had several federally funded projects utilizing Motivational Interviewing (MI) to improve health behaviors for many populations and delivered by many types of providers including medical providers, mental health providers, and paraprofessional staff.   She also has funded projects to study how to best teach MI and how to implement MI within organizations. Dr. Naar has worked closely with the developers of MI (Miller and Rollnick) to author the first textbook on the use of MI with adolescents and young adults (Motivation Interviewing with Adolescents and Young Adults).  She has experience in multi-site evaluation studies of complex, multi-level interventions for the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, and the Health Resources and Service Administration.  Dr. Naar has authored over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals.  She currently has a book contract with Guilford Press to author a text on integrating MI with other approaches such as cognitive behavioral treatment and skills training.

Trainer Statement

Behavior Change Consulting (BCC) was founded to provide skills and tools to promote health behavior change.  BCC uses Motivational Interviewing as its principal methodology, a proven approach backed by millions of dollars of funding from the National Institutes of Health and local health departments. Naar, founder and president of BCC is at the leading edge of this ongoing research in MI-based behavior change approaches and in methods to teach MI and implement MI within organizations. If you and your team would like to further develop skills in promoting behavior change, we will carefully develop a proposal tailored for your needs and budget constraints.  Please contact us or see our website at
