Advancing Motivational Interviewing Skills and Practice

This 2-day workshop aims to consolidate learning, deepen skills acquisition and increase understanding of using Motivational Interviewing in practice. It is designed for people who have attended an Introductory MI workshop previously.

Course Description

During these two days there will be a specific focus on the technical aspects of MI, e.g. evoking and strengthening change talk and reducing sustain talk through skilful practice. Participants will receive support, coaching and feedback during the workshop in relation to their own skills development. They will also be encouraged to develop their reflective practice as there will be focus in the workshop on what good MI looks like. Participants will also be steered towards appropriate materials, websites and encouraged to engage in an MI community of practice for their continued post-workshop learning.

The workshop will be highly participative in style. A mixture of didactic presentation, small group discussion, DVDs, demonstration and skills practice will aid adult learning, enabling participants to gain experience through demonstration and practice.

The workshop will be co-delivered by Judith Carpenter, International MI trainer and Dr Fiona Holland, Senior Lecturer in psychology and behaviour change at the University of Derby. Both are members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, an international organisation committed to promoting high-quality MI practice and training.
