A Motivational Interviewing-Consistent Roadmap into and through Planning

Brief Action Planning (BAP) is a pragmatic, evidence-informed, and versatile MI-consistent tool designed to support client self-management and facilitate health behavior change. In the recent 4th Edition of Motivational Interviewing, (2023), Miller and Rollnick discuss the MI-consistent use of BAP in Chapter 7 on Planning: “...when a person appears engaged and ready for action, there may be little need for evoking. It might even deter progress. In this context, a practitioner can both query readiness and initiate a planning process with brief action p;lanning (BAP), a method currently being taught in medical settings.” This presentation provides an overview of the core principles and practice of Brief Action Planning, and introduces learners to a novel integration of BAP and MI, called “BAP-MI.”
