Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a particular way of talking with people about change and growth to strengthen their own motivation and commitment. This five-week instructor-led course encompasses the purpose, mindset, heart-set, tasks, core interviewing skills, and guiding methods of Motivational Interviewing. Participants engage in learning through webcasts, written materials, videos, exercises, and practice opportunities.

Staff at all levels of health and human service agencies, behavioral health organizations, and recovery-centered organizations

Learning Objectives

As a result of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how Motivational Interviewing is more of a guiding method than a directive one
  • Describe the four elements of MI spirit
  • Explain the four tasks that guide motivational conversations
  • Provide examples of three core interviewing skills used in MI
  • Identify three strategies to elicit change talk
