Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy: Lessons from Motivational Interviewing

Free, 1-hour virtual session

Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, collaborative communication approach to promoting behavior change with demonstrated success in addressing vaccine hesitancy. Many healthcare professionals have some familiarity with MI, but lack sufficient training or practice to implement this approach effectively, sometimes attempting to seek collaboration, but often resorting to providing unsolicited education and corrections that shut down the conversation.

In this session, Carrie Bader, MPH, MOT, Boost Oregon’s Training Director will discuss the critical concepts needed to use MI successfully in brief encounters, as well as specific MI-adherent questions, responses, and prompts to support providers in having collaborative discussions that build vaccine confidence.

Learning Objectives:

1.  List key components of the spirit and principles of MI

2.  Discuss how the MI approach differs from a typical educational/persuasive approach

3.  Recognize MI-adherent responses to vaccine hesitancy
